HIPAA Overview

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996 was enacted to achieve the following:
  • improve access, portability and continuity of health insurance coverage in the group and individual markets;
  • combat waste, fraud and abuse in health insurance and health care delivery;
  • promote the use of medical savings accounts;
  • improve access to long-term care services and coverage

Where appropriate, UnitedHealthcare or UnitedHealth Networks Inc., has executed Business Associate contractual relationships with vendors in order to be compliant with the privacy regulations issued pursuant to HIPAA.  These vendors have agreed to abide by the terms of the statutes at issue with regard to the confidentiality of this information.
