In diagnostic imaging, accreditation programs have emerged as key initiatives to advance the quality and safety of imaging studies. It is important that consumers receive services from facilities whose equipment, technologists, and physicians are in compliance with established accreditation performance standards.
As of March 1, 2008, all freestanding facilities and physician offices performing outpatient imaging studies that bill on a CMS 1500 claim form will be required to obtain accreditation as a condition for reimbursement.
The imaging modalities include:
- CT
- CTA
- MRI
- MRA
- PET
- Nuclear Medicine/Cardiology
- Echocardiography
To meet the March 1, 2008, deadline, we recommend applying for accreditation as soon as possible. UnitedHealthcare recognizes the American College of Radiology (ACR) and the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) standards and has enlisted their expertise in facilitating accreditation.
Specific accreditation guidelines and standards are available on the ACR and IAC Web sites.
