UnitedHealth Premium Designation Program for Oncology
|
|
|
The UnitedHealth Premium® designation program for Oncology care seeks to improve care for adult cancers typically treated in a physician's office, such as breast lung, prostate and colon cancers and lymphomas. The program identifies and promotes oncologists and hematogists who provide care for adult patients using criteria built on published clinical treatment guidelines and who engage in shared decision-making with their patients. Shared decision-making is the process in which the physician and patient make a thoughtful treatment decision after reviewing the survival benefit, quality of life and expected outcomes of all options.
To be considered for designation, physicians must complete an application survey and be board certified in either oncology or hematology. Individual physicians receive the quality only designation. Oncology claims are not included in the designation evaluation and scorecards are not available for oncologists.
The program criteria require that the physician:
-
Engage in shared decision-making with the patient, choosing a treatment plan that aligns with the patient's life goals and values
-
Utilizes evidence-based medicine and reports use of national treatment guidelines (NCCN or ASCO)
-
Commits to seeing new patients within 1-5 days
-
Has access to and participates in NCI or other acceptable clinical trials
-
Requires cancer stage to be established and documented prior to treatment
